According to the World Hunger Day website, a third of the global population does not have access to nutritious food, and the current food system is failing to meet the needs of 2.4 billion people. The Food and Agriculture Organization says research released by the Lancet Medical Journal states that malnutrition contributes to 45% of all deaths of children under five-years-old annually.

In South Africa, the 2022 World Hunger Day which was observed over the weekend is commemorated amid reports of children dying of malnutrition in the country’s different provinces.

Professor Albert Modi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science at the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) joins Morning Live via Zoom.
