PhD Investigates Green Logistics in the South African Pharmaceutical Industry

Dr Aveshin Reddy earned his PhD from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he focused on the barriers affecting Green Logistics in South Africa’s pharmaceutical industry, specifically within Cipla Medpro Manufacturing.

Reddy’s academic journey began after completing his high schooling at Belverton Secondary School. Motivated to pursue higher studies, he enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) programme at UKZN, majoring in Corporate Management and Supply Chain Management.

His passion for Supply Chain Management developed during his undergraduate years, prompting him to pursue an honours degree in the same field.

After excelling in subjects like Introduction to Human Resources and Special Topics in Supply Chain Management, Reddy registered for a Master’s degree in Commerce, specialising in Supply Chain Management.

His master’s research, conducted at Cipla Medpro Manufacturing, focused on understanding the barriers to green supply chain management within the pharmaceutical industry. The goal was to identify and address obstacles to green initiatives at Cipla, ultimately improving the success rates of such initiatives.

Building on the insights from his master’s research, Reddy pursued a PhD in the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science (CAES) at UKZN. His doctoral work delved deeper into the environmental aspects of Green Logistics within the pharmaceutical sector, again focusing on Cipla Medpro Manufacturing.

The objective was to offer solutions to overcome barriers to green initiatives, improving both environmental performance and the overall success of pharmaceutical companies in South Africa.

Currently, Dr Reddy serves as an Academic and Student Experience Manager at Eduvos. Looking ahead, he is committed to promoting environmentally friendly business practices, emphasising a balance between economic, social and environmental sustainability.

‘I believe in achieving a global equilibrium among these pillars of sustainability, and I want to contribute to that vision,’ he said.

Reddy described his PhD experience as ‘a marathon through a dense, ever-shifting forest,’ filled with both moments of deep insight and significant challenges. The process, he explained, was not just about acquiring knowledge, but also contributing something new to his field. ‘It was a humbling experience that required consistency, time management, dedication, innovation and courage.’

Reddy expressed gratitude to his family, friends and supervisor, Professor Urmilla Bob, for their unwavering support throughout his doctoral journey.

Outside his professional life, Reddy enjoys long walks, immersing himself in nature, online gaming, fishing and watching anime.

His wife, Ms Sasha Badul, was inspired by Reddy’s dedication and consistency in completing his postgraduate studies while balancing a full-time career and family. ‘His passion for Green Supply Chain Management motivated him to push through despite the late nights, roadblocks and conflicting deadlines. I am incredibly proud of his achievements and inspired by his drive to make his dreams a reality,’ she said.
