Biography

Rajiv was born in the mining town of Glencoe, after matriculating in 1984 he served as an apprentice fitter at ISCOR Newcastle.  He later relocated, together with family, to the sugar milling town of Dalton. Rajiv joined the Natal Blood Transfusion services in the year 1989 as a plasma processing assistant for a period of 2.5 years. In 1991 Rajiv joined Allerton Regional Provincial Laboratories as a Specialized Auxiliary Services Officer in the Biochemistry section, later rising to the position of Veterinary Technologist. A total of 17 years was spent at Allerton after which he joined the discipline of Soil Science at UKZN (2008).

Rajiv is married to Asheena Singh who is an educator at the NEWTON HIGH SCHOOL, they have 2 children a boy (2nd year chemical engineering student at UKZN and a daughter aged 11 years). Rajiv has 2 elder siblings, the eldest of which graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Education from the then University of Durban Westville in the 1970’s and the second sibling with a Bachelor of Science Chemical Engineering from the University of Natal (PMB) in the early 1980’s.

Rajiv graduated with a National Diploma in Biotechnology from the Durban University of Technology in 2006 completing in a period of 2 years only. He obtained certificates in Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry from the Technikon Natal. Main areas of focus at the Allerton Laboratories were the analysis of animal blood, organs, bone and feed samples for diagnostic purposes. Areas of expertise include the use of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry coupled with hydride generation techniques, LECO nitrogen analyzer, GCMS, Clinical Chemistry Analyzer. Rajiv was involved in the analysis of blood and liver samples which were used in the survey of selenium levels in bovine and ovine in the KZN farming region. Rajiv was also involved in the analysis ovine plasma and whole blood for Professor Van Ryssen, for research purposes, who was based at the Discipline of Animal and Poultry Science at the then University of Natal. He was actively involved the Rural Disease Survey looking at trace element levels in rural livestock. He also served as LABWARE V5 administrator (Laboratory Information Management System), a paperless system for the receipt, logging and entering of results for submitted specimens. Rajiv also formed part of the good governance team at Allerton Laboratories which was awarded the Premiers Silver and Bronze medals for good governance and service excellence. Other Awards include a certificate of merit from the National Director of Veterinary Services for services rendered during the foot and mouth disease campaign 15/09/2000-26/01/2001.

On joining the University Of KwaZulu-Natal as the Senior Technician, Rajiv was place in charge of the Soil Science Technical component. Various improvements to the technical component were implemented with the acquisition of new equipment viz. Fast Sequential Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, LECO TRUMACS CNS analyzer, GALLERY DISCREET auto analyzer, and a MARS6 microwave digester.

Rajiv’s active participation in labour issues led to him being nominated as the chairperson of HOSPERSA (The Health & Other Services Personnel Trade Union of South Africa) at the Allerton Provincial Veterinary Laboratory and currently serves as an executive member to the University of KwaZulu-Natal Staff Union.
